With its farms, and abundance of antique architecture as well as state-of-the-art estates, the charm of this historic village is evident at every turn.
Sagaponack enjoys a robust real estate market offering everything from luxury rentals and large estates to waterfront homes for sale, all in close proximity to Sagaponack’s pristine ocean beaches, charming little red schoolhouse, farm stands, and its iconic General Store.
Settled in 1656, Sagaponack was a hamlet within the Town of Southampton until 2005, when residents voted to incorporate the area as Sagaponack Village. Originally called Sagg (still reflected in the names of Sagg Main Street, Sagg Main Beach, and Sagg Pond), the name Sagaponack is derived from its earlier inhabitants, the Shinnecock Indian Nation, who described the area as the “land of the big ground nuts,” or potatoes. Many acres of the original potato farms – active through the close of the 20th Century – are protected as agricultural reserves, maintaining the bucolic history and enchanting field views that contribute to the unique nature of this seaside village.
Considered to be one of the most beautiful ocean beaches on the East End of Long Island, Sagg Main Beach is located at the end of Sagg Main Street and offers a concession stand, showers, and restrooms. Popular activities include fishing and surfing, with available volleyball courts and an overlook platform.
With its farms and abundance of antique architecture, the charm of this historic village is evident at every turn. The “Commercial District” consists of a single Victorian building housing the popular Sagaponack General Store, a delicatessen, and café, along the village Post Office. Additional shopping can be done at Casales Flower & Farmstand, which sells only locally grown and produced products such as farm produce and flowers, and wine, and Loaves and Fishes, a gourmet food store.
